Vietnam eSIM guide: networks, coverage and setup

Local networks

• ViettelLargest operator with the widest coverage, including rural and mountain provinces; first to launch 5G (Oct 2024).
• VinaPhone (VNPT)Second nationwide network, good coverage in cities and main routes.
• MobiFoneThird nationwide network, strong in major cities; launched 5G in 2025.

5G5G is live on Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone, mainly in cities; 4G covers most of the country. Vietnam's 2G network was scheduled to shut down in mid-September 2026.

Must-knows

• Grab and other ride-hailing apps are widely used; a data connection is essential for booking.
• Street SIMs sold without proper registration can be cut off later; buy from official counters or use an eSIM.

Buying a local SIM

SIMs are sold at airport counters and operator stores. Under Decree 163/2024, foreigners register with a passport and facial biometric verification; unverified SIMs can be locked.

Weak-signal areas

Good in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and main tourist areas. Northern mountain areas (e.g. Ha Giang loop) and remote islands can be patchy; Viettel usually reaches furthest.
