Must-knows
- VoIP calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime audio, Skype) require a TDRA licence and are generally blocked; licensed apps such as BOTIM work.
- Text messaging, photos and files on WhatsApp and KakaoTalk work normally.
Buying a local SIM
Tourist SIMs/eSIMs are available at Dubai airport arrivals (both e& and du), activated with your passport; e&'s Visitor Line is valid for up to 90 days, matching your visa. Free welcome SIM/eSIM offers exist at DXB but change often.
Weak-signal areas
Excellent in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and along main highways. Deep desert and some mountain areas (Hajar) can lose signal.
