Thailand eSIM guide: networks, coverage and setup
Thailand has strong 4G/5G in Bangkok and tourist areas. Since August 2025 every new local SIM needs passport plus a live face check.

Local networks
- AISLargest operator by revenue; rated best 5G network by Opensignal (2025).
- True (True-dtac)Merged with dtac in 2023; largest by subscribers, reports 93% 5G population coverage.
- NT (National Telecom)State operator, smaller network.
5G5G covers Bangkok and most of the country's populated areas on AIS and True.
Must-knows
- Grab and Bolt need data; a Thai number is not required to book.
- Island coverage (Phuket, Samui, Phi Phi) is generally good near towns and beaches, weaker at sea.
Buying a local SIM
Tourist SIMs are sold at airport arrival halls and operator shops. Under NBTC rules from 18 August 2025, registration needs your passport and a live biometric face check in person or in the operator's app; copies are not accepted.
Weak-signal areas
Strong in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya. Northern mountains, national parks and open sea between islands can be weak.
