Europe eSIM guide: roaming rules, coverage and setup
One European eSIM can cover many countries because EU 'roam like at home' rules run until 2032. The UK and Switzerland are outside those rules, so check that they are included.

- Roam-like-at-home covers the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The UK is not included after Brexit; Switzerland was never included.
- Regional plans list their countries; check the UK, Switzerland, Turkey and the Balkans if they are on your route.
- Ferries and cruises may connect to expensive maritime networks; turn off data roaming at sea.
Buying a local SIM
Rules differ by country. Many EU countries (e.g. Germany, Italy, Spain) require a passport to activate a prepaid SIM. A SIM bought in one EU country can roam in other EU/EEA countries at no extra cost, subject to fair-use limits.
Weak-signal areas
Cities are well covered. Alpine valleys, rural Scandinavia and some rail tunnels can lose signal.
