Australia's networks cover almost everyone in towns, but most of the land area (the outback) has no signal. Telstra reaches furthest.

5G5G is available in capital cities and many regional centres. All 3G networks closed in 2024, so older phones without 4G voice (VoLTE) may not work or may be blocked.

- On road trips, check coverage maps and carry offline maps; long highway stretches have no signal.

Buying a local SIM
Prepaid SIMs are sold at airports, supermarkets and post offices. Operators must verify your identity before activation (since 2017); visitors typically use a passport.
Weak-signal areas
Excellent in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and on the east coast. Outback, Red Centre, Kimberley and remote parts of Tasmania have large gaps.
