UK ETA: how to apply · UK entry requirements
South Korean citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man for up to 6 months. It costs £20, lasts 2 years or until the passport expires, and has been strictly enforced since 25 February 2026: airlines will not board you without one.

- Who
- Visitors who do not need a visa for short stays and have no UK immigration status, from eligible nationalities including South Korea (eligible since 8 January 2025). Every traveller, including babies and children, needs one. British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens, cannot get one and do not need one.
- When
- Apply at least 3 working days before travel. Most app applicants get an automatic decision in minutes.

- Validity
- 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever is sooner. Unlimited trips; up to 6 months per visit.
- Processing
- Usually within a day by email, but it can take up to 3 working days. You must wait for the confirmation email before travelling.
Steps
- Install the official 'UK ETA' app (iPhone 7+/iOS 16+, or Android 12+ with NFC) or use the online form on GOV.UK.
- Take a photo of your passport photo page and, in the app, scan the passport chip.
- Take or upload a photo of your face that meets the digital photo rules.
- Answer the questions (including criminal record) and give an email address.
- Pay £20 by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay (non-refundable).
- Wait for the email with your 16-digit ETA reference number; travel with the same passport.

Watch out
- Other websites may charge more; applying elsewhere does not get a faster decision. Use GOV.UK or the UK ETA app only.
- If you are rejected or need to change details, you must apply (and pay) again; there are no refunds.
- An ETA is also needed when transiting 'landside' through UK border control.
- With a criminal record or a previous UK refusal, GOV.UK suggests applying for a Standard Visitor visa instead.

Do I need an ETA just to change planes at Heathrow?
Only if you pass through UK border control. If you stay airside, you do not need one; check with your airline.
Can I apply for my family?
Yes. In the app the person must be with you; if they are not, apply for them online with a photo of their passport and face.
