Canada eTA: how to apply · entry requirements
Visa-exempt travellers, including South Korean passport holders, need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. It costs CAD 7 and is valid for up to 5 years or until the passport expires. No eTA is needed when entering by car, bus, train or boat. Advance Declaration in ArriveCAN is optional.

- Who
- Visa-exempt foreign nationals (including South Korean citizens) flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. US citizens and lawful US permanent residents are exempt.
- When
- Apply before you book your flight. Most are approved within minutes, but some take several days if documents are requested.
- Fee
- CA$7.00
- Validity
- Up to 5 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Multiple trips; stays are normally up to 6 months at a time.
- Processing
- Usually within minutes. If more documents are needed, instructions are emailed within 72 hours.
Steps
- Check you are travelling by air on a passport from a visa-exempt country (South Korea is visa-exempt).
- Prepare your passport, email address and payment card; the form cannot be saved, so gather everything first.
- Open the eTA application from the official Canada.ca page.
- Answer the questions and enter the passport number exactly as printed.
- Pay CAD 7.
- Wait for the approval email and check the passport number in it matches your passport.

Watch out
- Unofficial sites charge more than CAD 7; apply only through Canada.ca.
- If the passport number in your eTA is wrong, you must apply again; airlines check the eTA by scanning the passport.
- A new passport means a new eTA.
- Entering from the US by land does not need an eTA, but flying back into Canada does.

- Check that your arrival airport participates in Advance Declaration.
- Open ArriveCAN (app or web) within 72 hours before your flight.
- Confirm your travel document details.
- Answer the customs and immigration questions truthfully and submit.
- At the airport, use the kiosk or eGate with the same passport.

FAQ
Is Canada's eTA the same as a visa?
No. It is an electronic authorization linked to your passport for visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada. The border officer still decides on entry.
Do I need an eTA if I drive in from the US?
No. The eTA is only required for air travel to or through Canada.
Do I need to print the eTA?
No. It is linked electronically to your passport; present the same passport at check-in.
